Haystacks on the Mountain

Six haystacks are scattered over a grey-green meadow, their points sharp and a supporting pole projecting above each. They are painted in thick vertical strokes in which orange, dark blue, brown and white sit side by side without blending, so that each stack seems woven from colours. Behind them a dark green wood, furrowed with thick white patches — snow or mist — climbs towards the crest, and above appears a strip of bluish sky. The foreground meadow is treated flatly in horizontal strokes. The paint is the thickest of the 2000s, applied almost entirely with the knife.
