Haystacks at Brebu

An almost monochrome watercolour in grey and brown: five conical brown-ochre haystacks line up in the foreground, their supporting poles projecting like needles. Behind them a line of dark barns and roofs is barely legible, painted in rapid grey-black strokes with a few green accents of vegetation. The sky, the upper half, is a heavy grey wash allowed to run, with undefined clouds. The ground is a yellow-green strip. The technique is direct and rapid, almost a field note; all the warmth of the picture lies in the brown of the hay.
