2012 · oil on canvas · 60 × 60 cm

A frontal view of a niche built in brick: the arch above is made of radially set bricks, and the surrounding wall alternates pink-orange brick with grey river stones, each painted in separate thick strokes. Inside the niche the darkness is suggested by a brown-violet patch. On the stone sill lie two cut sunflowers: one with its golden petals open, the other with its green disc turned towards the viewer, its broad leaves fallen beside it. The contrast between the yellow of the flowers and the warm red of the wall supplies all the light; the texture of the masonry is followed patiently, brick by brick.
