Apples
Mere
2014 · watercolour · 30 × 42 cm
A watercolour of eight apples grouped on a table: the fruits — carmine red, raw green and yellow ochre — are modelled through overlaid washes, the white of the paper reserved for the highlights on their skins and bluish shadows at their bases. Behind them falls a grey and violet drape rendered in broad vertical bands allowed to run; at the left a lighter cloth closes the composition. The shadow beneath the fruit is drawn in a single movement, in blue-grey. The signature and year are written at the lower left. The simplicity is deliberate: only fruit, cloth and shadow.
