Birches, Pietriceaua
Mesteceni, Pietriceaua
2007 · oil on canvas, 41.5 × 50.5 cm
A stand of birches occupies the centre and right of the canvas: slender white trunks with black marks on the bark rise from grey-white snow, their sparse crowns indicated by brick-red and orange patches like remaining leaves. At the left two larger trees with spreading branches balance the group. Behind stretches a dark, almost black mass of woodland, above which a white mountain crest appears. The sky, nearly half the surface, is a uniform cloudless beige-grey. The foreground is smooth snow with a plank fence and a few posts. The colour is muted, and the red of the leaves is the only vivid accent.
