A hill landscape with a pale road entering at the lower corner and rising towards the centre between brown-violet banks. At the middle a clump of autumn trees concentrates all the warm colour of the picture — orange, ochre and brick red — pierced by a few slender trunks drawn as black lines. Behind rises a blue-grey massif treated in broad strokes, and the sky is a nearly rubbed-out band of bluish white. The painting alternates flat knife-laid surfaces with short strokes in the crowns; the cool background pushes the warm central patch towards the viewer.
