Landscape at Cornu
Peisaj la Cornu
1998 · oil on canvas · 60 × 81 cm
A view from a hillside: in the foreground an ochre-green slope climbs from the lower corner, covered with bushes and boulders painted in dark green, blue-grey and reddish brown, with light patches marking the stones. A slender leafless tree rises at the centre, the only clear vertical. Beyond the slope the valley dissolves into layers of blue-grey and white, growing paler towards the horizon, and the sky is an almost cloudless pink-violet expanse. The colour is cool and muted with very few warm accents; depth is achieved solely by the fading of successive planes, as in classical aerial perspective.
