A mountain homestead seen frontally: at the left a low house with a porch and metal roof; beside it a wooden barn raised on posts with plank walls. In front, four conical yellow-ochre haystacks line up on a grey-green meadow. The background is a dense fir wood painted in dark green and blue, rising towards a blue-grey massif whose crest is covered with snow and thick white cloud. The sky is dark blue above, lighter towards the crest. The foreground is brown-violet ground. The colour is cool and deep; the haystacks are the only warm note.
