The Large Ravine

Râpa Mare

2007 · oil on canvas, 50 × 50 cm

A large ravine occupies the centre of the canvas, its wall broken into plates of cream white, ochre, brown and dark green cut by strong accents of brick red and blue; the paint is thick, knife-laid in broad slabs that follow the strata of the earth. At its foot a row of low houses with white walls and red roofs lines up, small against the mass of the ravine. The foreground is a flatly treated ochre-green meadow. The sky, almost half the surface, is pale blue with traces of white cloud. The relation of scale — the tiny houses beneath the wall of earth — is what gives the work its dimension.
