Willows
Sălcii
2010 · oil on canvas · 30 × 41 cm
A row of willows crosses the canvas horizontally, their rounded crowns painted in grey-green, ochre and cream in broad strokes, with slender black trunks tying them to a brown-violet bank. Beyond them the hill rises as a grey-white mass, its crests marked by strokes of thick paint. The sky, the upper third, is a smooth pink-grey surface. The foreground is bare ochre and muted green ground. The colour is held in close, broken tones; the work functions as a study of silhouettes against a light ground.
