Silver Willows 1
Sălcii argintii 1
2007 · oil on canvas, 53 × 66 cm
A stand of old willows fills the whole canvas: the thick reddish-brown trunks are pollarded at head height, and from their tops spring dense bundles of shoots that rise vertically and merge into a silvery green crown painted in short strokes of grey, white, pale green and blue. Light falls between the trunks, leaving white and pale yellow patches on the ground. The soil is a yellow-green strip with brick-red accents. There is no proper sky — the foliage closes the composition above; the sensation is of standing beneath the trees, in filtered light.
