Savonarola

A figure composition worked in tempera on a violet-brick ground. At the right a large male profile — sloping forehead, frontally drawn eye, sharp nose — occupies the whole register, reduced to a few black lines and grey patches. At the left rises an elongated white figure built from parallel hatching, like a bandaged form. Between them an intense blue field is crossed by black horizontal bars, by two white clouds set down like objects, and by a black-and-white triangle descending at the centre. The touch is dry, applied in layers that let the ground show through; nothing is described realistically — the work functions as a sign rather than as a scene.
