Tree Trunk
Trunchi
2007 · oil on canvas, 69 × 80 cm
A large trunk, seen very close to, occupies the centre of the canvas and divides into two arms that leave the frame; the bark is broken into broad planes of blue-grey, brown, ochre and white with firm black contours, and at its middle a dark oval form — a hollow — functions like an eye. Around it the landscape is reduced to bands of colour: golden ochre above, olive green and blue in the middle, and strong accents of bright red and yellow below. There is no depth; everything is brought into the same plane. The work is the closest to abstraction in the 2007 series.
