Flowering Shrub
Arbust cu flori
2007 · oil on canvas, 73.5 × 75 cm
The canvas is filled entirely by a tall clump of hollyhocks: dozens of white funnel-shaped flowers with carmine centres sit on vertical stems rising in parallel towards the upper edge. Between them slip olive-green leaves and slender stalks, and the ground is a weave of blue-green, grey and accents of red and orange that describes neither sky nor earth. The flowers are painted in thick paint, each petal in a single broad stroke; the red centres set the rhythm of the whole surface. There is no horizon — the eye enters straight into the thicket, as if standing among the plants.
