Mariuca’s House
Casa Mariucai
2007 · oil on canvas, 47 × 57 cm
A low white house with a straight roof stands at the centre of the canvas, almost covered by the crowns of the surrounding trees; its walls, treated in bluish white with vertical strokes, are the brightest area of the work. Above, the foliage opens into a mass of golden ochre, olive green, brick red and blue, applied with the knife in broad slabs. Behind, the hill closes into a dense dark blue, and the sky above is clear blue. The foreground is ochre and reddish-brown ground with a few slender posts. The contrast between the white of the house and the warm mass of the crowns is the core of the composition.
