A work left unfinished: the ground is a barely covered landscape, with yellow-green and raw yellow hills applied in thin layers through which the canvas shows. At the centre a massive form in brick red, white and blue-grey — a ravine or a rock — is carried further than the rest, in thick paint and short strokes, with a zone of dark green and grey gathering beneath it. The edges of the canvas remain almost bare, with broad passages of the brush. The method is visible: first the large masses of colour, then the warm accent at the centre, with detail to come last.
