The Gully

A wooded gully seen from within: slender grey and brown trunks rise vertically the full height of the canvas, some straight, others leaning, with low branches crossing. Between them the foliage is painted in raw green, emerald and yellow-green in short strokes that let the light slip through like white gaps. The floor is a green and brown slope with ochre accents, descending to the left. No sky is visible and there is no horizon; all the depth comes from the overlapping of the trunks. The green is the freshest in the whole late series.
