Flowering Tree

A single blossoming tree occupies the centre of the canvas: its crown is built from hundreds of pink and white petals, each a broad knife stroke, laid over a dark core of branches; the short brown-violet trunk rests on golden-ochre ground. Behind, at the left, spreads a grey-green meadow, and at the right a fence and low roofs can be made out in blue and crimson. The sky is blue-grey applied in horizontal strokes. The foreground is a strip of earth with the marks of furrows. The pink of the blossom, the only warm saturated colour, is held in balance by the vast neutral surface around it.
