The Lock
Ecluza
1984 · oil on canvas · 72 × 83 cm
An industrial landscape seen from above and laid out almost like a plan: at the centre a large surface is divided into red, grey and brown rectangular basins bounded by ruled black lines. Two vertical posts cross it, and in front a row of slender dark poplars stands along a blue-grey stretch of water. In the lower foreground a second red basin, drawn in perspective, runs out of the frame; above, beyond an ochre dyke, the sky is a band of apricot yellow with a violet patch. The colour is applied in thin matte layers, and the strict geometry of the basins contrasts with the free brushwork of sky and water.
