Night Phantasm

A nocturnal view from above over a settlement: the sky, filling the upper half, is a dark blue mass crossed by horizontal bands of pink-grey and white cloud pushed on with a broad brush. Below the horizon the town appears as a dense row of white, ochre and brick patches, with a few large rounded forms — tree crowns or domes — lit from the left. The foreground is an almost empty brown-violet strip that lifts the eye towards the bright middle band. There are no firm contours: everything is built from overlaid patches, and the artificial light is suggested by an accumulation of light strokes rather than by point sources.
