Poppies
Maci
1997 · watercolour · 30 × 40 cm
A white bowl with blue decoration stands at the centre holding a bunch of red poppies, their petals open and their dark hearts marked with a few black strokes. From it long thin branches shoot out in every direction, scattered with small salmon-pink blossoms that spread like a net across the whole background — a warm grey-green worked in broad washes. A few emerald leaves and white accents cluster around the mouth of the bowl. The technique is watercolour or thinned tempera: the flower contours melt into the paper, and the red of the poppies remains the only saturated colour, held in balance by the white of the bowl.
