2002 · oil on canvas · 65 × 81 cm
A rocky bank occupies the left and centre of the canvas: a sharp crest rises from the water, its faces white and cream worked with the knife, its slopes olive green, its hollows dark blue. At its foot, in the lower left corner, two narrow boats lie drawn up on the shore, drawn in firm black strokes. The water spreads to the right in blue-grey and green with horizontal white reflections, and in the distance the far bank fades into a thin line. The sky is pale blue with long white clouds. The northern motif of the title is a metaphor: it is the form of the rock, rather than the place, that held the painter's interest.
