Flower (detail) / Orchid
Floare (detaliu) / Orhidee
2002 · oil on canvas · 65 × 81 cm
A very close framing of a single flower: a lady's-slipper orchid whose long twisted petals, in deep crimson, spread like a propeller across the whole canvas. At the centre the fleshy lip, in cream yellow and brown-violet, is carefully modelled, its edges turned in and a small shadow inside. The ground is a weave of emerald, turquoise and cobalt leaves treated in broad patches that describe no space but push the flower forward. The complementary red-green contrast is taken to its limit; the enlargement to close-up scale turns the plant into an almost architectural structure.
