A haystack fills almost the whole canvas, raised on a structure of vertical poles visible beneath it like a palisade; the hay is painted in golden ochre, brown and olive green with curved strokes following the conical form, and the top is marked by a thin pole. Around it the snow spreads in bluish white in broad horizontal strokes, and behind, a blue-grey bank and a few dark forms close the horizon. The sky is a low blue-grey band. The warm-cool contrast — ochre against blue-white — is the same as in "Haystack", but here the mass of hay is seen from closer to.
