Winter
Iarna
2007 · oil on canvas, 54.5 × 54.5 cm
A leafless tree stands at the right of the canvas, its trunk blackish brown and its branches laden with snow, rendered by short white strokes settling over the drawing of the limbs. Around it the snow covers a broad slope painted in white, blue-grey and violet in long horizontal strokes, with a few orange accents marking bare earth. Behind, the hills rise in blue-grey bands, and the sky is a smooth pearl-grey surface. The composition is simple and balanced; all the tension comes from the contrast between the dark vertical of the tree and the cool horizontals of the snow.
