Forest Edge, Autumn
Liziera Toamna
2007 · oil on canvas, 72 × 91 cm
A woodland edge crosses the canvas horizontally, its crowns opening into a series of large patches: golden yellow, orange, brick red, olive green and blue-grey, applied with the knife in broad overlapping slabs. A few slender, almost black trunks emerge from the mass, tying the foliage to the ground. The foreground is a yellow-ochre meadow treated in horizontal strokes with violet shadows. The sky, the upper third, is a washed grey-white surface that makes the colours of the crowns seem brighter still. The work is among the most chromatic of 2007 — autumn is given purely through colour, not through detail.
