Bank in Bloom 2

Mal înflorit 2

2002 · oil on canvas, 78.5 × 78.5 cm

The largest version of the motif: a whole hill is covered with bright pink and carmine blossom, painted in thousands of small brush-tip patches descending in terraces to the bottom edge of the canvas. Between them run blue-grey and crimson furrows marking the undulations of the ground, and towards the crest the blossom opens into pure white. Above, a pink-white bank rises beneath a cobalt sky cut straight across. The colour is at full saturation and covers the surface evenly, almost like a tapestry; the work is the most decorative of the series and at the same time the most physical — the paint is thick throughout.
