Bank in Bloom
Mal înflorit
2002 · oil on canvas · 70 × 85 cm
An entire bank covered with blossom fills almost the whole surface: thousands of small patches of pink, carmine and white, applied one by one, rise in waves from the bottom edge to the upper right, letting dark blue and crimson shadows show between them. At the upper left a band of deep blue and a dark passage close the composition and set the measure of the contrast. There is no sky and no horizon — only the flowering mass and what carries it. The paint is thick, raised in relief on each petal; the work is closer to a colour field than to a described landscape.
