Miners
Mineri
1978 · oil on canvas · 79 × 65 cm
A figure composition: in the lower register a group of miners moves to the right, bodies elongated, shoulders hunched, tools shouldered or raised; a second, paler group appears at the left like an echo. Above them the canvas is divided into large rectangles of slate blue, grey-green and pale ochre that overlap like gallery walls or scaffolding, with a whitish band running horizontally to suggest daylight at the pit mouth. The figures are not described anatomically but reduced to brown contours and beige accents, almost incised into the paint. The overall tone is dark and matte, the pigment rubbed on thinly, and the scene reads as a frieze rather than a snapshot.
