Still Life

An almost monochrome watercolour still life in sepia, brown-violet and grey. At the centre stands a clay jug with a handle, its body rendered in overlaid washes that leave the white of the paper to suggest light; beside it a low metal pot and a few long-handled tools — a small shovel, a knife — cross diagonally. Behind, dark undefined forms gather like drapery. The ground is pink-white with wet blooms that have run. Contours are not drawn but result from the edges of the washes; the objects read through shadow rather than through drawing.
