Walnut Tree
Nuc
2011 · oil on canvas · 60 × 50 cm
A solitary walnut tree occupies the centre of the canvas: its grey-white trunk rises straight and branches high up, carrying a dense crown built from hundreds of short strokes of dark green, olive and blue-grey that leave small gaps of ground between them. Below, a strip of ochre earth with a wattle fence crosses the canvas, and behind the tree a blue band marks a hill or water. The ground is a uniform pink-grey applied in vertical strokes. The composition is frontal and symmetrical — a portrait of a tree, isolated from any narrative context.
