Landscape with Hills
Peisaj cu dealuri

A small horizontal work in which a run of rounded hills in golden ochre and brick pink crosses the canvas from left to right. At their base a compact stand of blackish-green trees forms a dark line, the only hard accent in the composition; in the lower foreground appear patches of emerald and turquoise. The sky fills the upper half as a uniform pink-violet field without clouds. Forms are reduced to masses of colour without contour, and the paint is laid in short matte strokes; the effect is of late evening light, when the ground still holds warmth and the sky has already cooled.
