Cloudy Landscape at Cornu

A watercolour in which the sky takes up almost half the sheet: a heavy blue mass allowed to run in bands, with a single dark tree silhouetted against it at the left. Below, the valley opens in steps of raw green, olive and ochre, cut by a white stream winding to the right, reserved directly in the white of the paper. The foreground is a slope worked in reddish-brown and blue strokes drawn with an almost dry brush. The technique alternates the wet-in-wet of the sky with firm, almost drawn accents in the vegetation; the signature and year appear in pencil at the lower left.
