Tree (study 1)
Pom (studiu 1)
1994 · oil on canvas · 54 × 58 cm
A leafless tree stands at the centre of the canvas, its black-brown trunk rising vertically and its thin branches spreading like a drawing across the background. Behind it the ground is broken into broad planes — a large grey-white patch at the centre, bands of brick, ochre and faded pink above and below, laid on thickly with the knife. The sky at the top is a continuous pink-beige surface without clouds, so that the branches read as lines on paper. There are no shadows: space is built solely from the overlapping bands of colour, and the tree remains the only drawn element, everything else being painted in patches.
