A cluster of sheds and improvised outbuildings crowds the middle plane: white and grey metal roofs set at different angles, reddish-brown plank walls, a brick-red wall at the left, and a tangle of posts and beams projecting outwards. Above them a white crest of vegetation or snow crosses the canvas. The foreground is bare ground in grey-white and muted green, with the traces of collapsed fences. The sky is a uniform pink-grey surface. The colour is muted and the paint thick; the subject — the poor edge of a town — is treated without picturesqueness, as a problem in the construction of forms.
