Ravine 3
Râpă 3
2010 · oil on canvas · 38 × 45 cm
The lip of a ravine crosses the canvas diagonally from lower left to upper right: the earth is golden ochre and cream, knife-laid in broad smooth slabs with brown-violet shadows in the hollows. Along the crest grow leafless bushes and shrubs painted in brown, blue-grey and muted green, in compact forms almost like stones. Beyond them the sky is a uniform pale pink surface filling the whole upper left corner. The foreground is a bare smooth slope. The colour is warm and restricted, and the whole work rests on the relation between the flat surface of the earth and the ragged silhouette of the vegetation.
