Forest
Pădure
2010 · oil on canvas · 72 × 82 cm
A beech wood seen from within: straight blue-grey trunks rise vertically the full height of the canvas, growing denser towards the background until they dissolve into a weave of white, cream and greenish strokes. Those in the foreground are thick and modelled in dense paint, with low branches cutting across the composition. The floor is a brown-ochre strip with dry leaves suggested by short patches. No sky is visible; the light comes from deep within the wood, like white mist between the trunks. The colour is almost monochrome — grey, white, brown — and the rhythm of the verticals takes the place of composition.
