Willows on the Plateau

Two pollarded willows stand at the centre of the canvas, their short black trunks throwing up slender vertical shoots; their crowns are masses of cobalt, grey-green, white and crimson accents applied in thick slabs. Around them the plateau is an almost empty cream-white and blue-grey surface, with a thin fence at the right and a streak of blue water at the left. In the distance the hills fade into pale blue, and the sky is a clear light blue filling the upper half. The composition is simple and frontal; the trees function as two signs on a white ground.
