Three Elms
Trei ulmi
2013 · oil on canvas · 38 × 40 cm
A golden-yellow bank occupies the centre of the canvas, treated in broad smooth slabs of saturated yellow, ochre and cream with bright red accents and dark forms — bushes or boulders — tumbling across it. Along the crest stand three leafless elms with slender trunks and branches drawn like threads, silhouetted against a grey-green and white ground. The foreground is a blue-green slope with white patches. The sky is almost absent; the landscape rises to the top edge. The yellow is the strongest chromatic accent of the late years and is held without any transition into the surrounding green.
