Rocks by the Gorge Bridge
Stanci la podul cheii
2002 · oil on canvas, 48 × 59 cm
An almost conical hill rises at the centre of the canvas, its top flattened and its slopes divided into bands of emerald, dark blue, ochre and brick red laid like strips of ground. At its base a belt of vertical white rocks crosses the full width, cut by blue shadows. Two red roofs appear at the left, and at the right the ground descends into an ochre strip. The sky, the upper third, is a smooth blue-grey surface that makes the hill seem even more coloured. The brushwork is broad and decisive, and the colours describe less the substance than the rhythm of the slope.
