Rocks
Stanci
2002 · oil on canvas · 55.5 × 55.5 cm
A rock face fills almost the whole canvas: vertical blades of cream-white stone rise side by side, their faces lit and their edges sharply cut, while between them open dark blue and green, almost black crevasses. Above, beyond the crest, an ochre slope and a grey hill close the composition under a thin strip of sky. At the base appear patches of olive green and brown. The paint is thick and knife-laid, following the direction of each blade; there is no figure, road or house to give scale — hence the impression of monumentality.
