Shadows in the Park
Umbre în parc
1992 · oil on canvas · 81 × 116 cm
A rock wall occupies the middle of the canvas, split into vertical strips of blue, reddish-brown and green like folds; below it the ground descends in broad waves of indigo and emerald crossed by long shadows. At the left a passage of yellow-green and white light breaks the cool dominant, while at the upper right a black undulating branch stands out against a grey sky. The colour is more saturated than in the landscapes of the same years, and the brushwork follows the direction of the forms, stretching everything vertically. The title is explained by the treatment: the shadows are painted as forms in their own right, not as an absence of light.
