2002 · oil on canvas · 42 × 50 cm

Almost two thirds of the canvas is moving water: blue-grey, white and greenish waves painted in broad curved strokes that turn towards the lower right corner. Above them rises a bank broken into blocks — cream white, ochre and two strong brick-red accents set down like rocks or ruined houses. Further back a dark blue crest and a greenish-grey sky close the composition, with a single lighter strip towards the horizon. The paint is thick and churned, the brushwork following the current; the colour is cool overall, with the reds acting as anchors for the eye.
