The Old House at Brebu
Casa veche la Brebu
2002 · oil on canvas · 47 × 55 cm
A long low house stands at the centre of the canvas, with a red sheet-metal roof, an open porch and a row of yellow-ochre windows that read as patches of light on the white façade. In front grows a leafless tree with a slender trunk and spreading branches, and at the left rises a conical stack of maize stalks propped on poles. Behind, the hillside closes into a mass of crowns painted in emerald, blue and pink, with white patches suggesting blossom. The foreground is a green-turquoise meadow with an ochre streak. The brushwork is broad, laid in adjacent patches, and the colour is more saturated than in the landscapes of the 1990s — the greens and blues are left at full intensity.
