The Canal

A composition built on a single deep perspective: a concrete canal runs from the centre down to the bottom edge between two grey embankments that close like a V, ending in a dark round mouth. Behind it, successive bands hold a blue-grey dyke, an autumn wood in ochre and rust worked in short vertical strokes, and, above everything, a blue-grey mountain mass with a jagged crest. The sky is reduced to a thin white strip at the top. The paint is thick, knife-laid in the stone and woodland passages, giving the surface a real relief, while the palette stays cool — grey, blue, muted ochre.
