A cluster of white houses with red roofs gathers at the centre of the canvas, stepping up towards the background, while a few trees with compact grey-green crowns stand between them and the viewer. The foreground is a broad pink-crimson expanse treated as a flat carpet with no detail; behind, the hill is closed off by a bluish band and a pale washed ochre sky. Forms are simplified to triangles and rectangles, the contours stay soft, and the colour is laid in short opaque strokes whose edges touch without mixing. The picture is a chord of pink, white and muted green rather than a topographical description.
