Haystack / Hayrick
Căpiță / Claie de fân
2007 · oil on canvas · 50 × 50 cm
A haystack occupies the centre of the canvas, raised on a frame of vertical poles that hold it above the ground: the hay is painted in golden ochre and yellow with curved strokes following the conical form, while the poles below are rendered in brown, crimson and black like a palisade. Around it the snow spreads in bluish white, in broad horizontal strokes with grey patches marking the undulations. The sky is a uniform grey surface with wide knife marks, descending to the horizon line. Warm and cool confront one another directly: the yellow patch of the hay is the only point of warmth in an otherwise frozen picture.
