Autumn Lilies
Crini de toamna
2007 · oil on canvas, 65 × 65 cm
A clump of lilies fills the whole canvas: the white trumpet-shaped flowers sit on long vertical stems pointing in every direction, their petals painted in thick white with blue-green shadows. At the base, broad heart-shaped leaves in dark green and blue overlap into a dense carpet, their crimson undersides showing where they turn. The background is a composition of broad planes — blue-grey, orange, blue and red — that describes no place but works as flat scenery. The contrast between the white of the flowers and the orange of the ground is brutal and deliberate; the paint is thick throughout.
