Haystacks and Acacias
Căpițe și salcâmi
2002 · oil on canvas · 36.5 × 41.5 cm
Six conical haystacks are scattered over a turquoise-green meadow, arranged in depth: two large ones in front, the others diminishing towards the background. Each is painted from vertical strokes alternating orange-ochre with blue-violet and crimson, so that the shadow is not grey but coloured. Behind rises a dense screen of flowering acacias — dark green, turquoise and thick white patches applied with the knife — above which a strip of bluish-white sky appears. The ground is treated flatly, almost like a carpet. The complementary contrast between the orange of the stacks and the blue-green of the trees is the real subject of the picture.
