In the lower right corner a wooden cart with large wheels and a raised shaft fills the foreground, painted in reddish brown and white with the spokes clearly drawn. Beyond a wattle fence that crosses the canvas, two white houses line up — one with a bright red roof, the other duller — among leafless trees with thin branches. Behind, the hill rises in waves of blue, grey and ochre with brick-red accents and a white crest, while the sky is a thick grey-violet surface. The brushwork is broad and energetic, applied with the knife; the colour is more dramatic than the motif, the blue of the hill almost as strong as the red of the roof.
